Until I and my wife left for the airport, we were in full hope of the beautiful journey into South America, which has been our life long dream. But actual flight time was a nightmare. Busan - Seoul - New York - Lima - Santiago - Sao Paulo - Rio De Janeiro, which took us 38 hours by the cheap air tickets. When we arrived in Rio, we were totally exhausted. However Servas people made our travel more adventurous.

Keeping a nice treasure of good memories, we are so grateful to the Servas people, which reminded us of the same question again that what Servas is. If we were not a Servas, we couldn't meet so many different people and see their lives in their homes. How privileged we are! We have as many friends, families and relatives in 136 countries! Wow!.

We, Korean Servas over 400 families, are eagerly waiting for the visitors from abroad. Due to the proximity by geographically to Japan and China, Servas people prefer to go those countries. We had less than 30 visitors last year from abroad. What are disappointing trends. People once visited this country, they visit us again without fail. Someday we would like to come to S. American countries again.

Many thanks go to Mr. Roberto Borenstein, Area Coordinator, Ms. Laura Ragucci former International Host List Coordinator, and many other people who helped us in this travel and those who hosted, dayhosted and shared time with us. We could get the Host Lists just before leaving, so I would confess that contacting people in far advance, at least 6 months, which is Servas tradition, has been neglected in this travel.

In peace.

Rio, Brazil
We checked in a small hotel near the beautiful beach of Copacabana, Rio, Brazil. and called *DH Marcia Beatriz Bello and Patricia Martinelli. Those two sisters were first Brazilians for us to meet in person. Marcia, an actress and director of theater and younger sister Patricia, a lawyer, shared their time in full swing to us.

They know what is most attractive to the strangers to the city, which drink is killing to the people who visited the Rio for the first time. It was my wife who fell a first victim to drunkeness from the 'caipirinha,' the Brazilian national cocktail from - cachansa(a high-proof sugar cane alcohol with crushed lemon, sugar and ice). The taste was sweet and cool but the result was sublime. The sisters were to be blamed for my wife's dozing when we were chatting. She had to put the shirt on, which Patricia had brought to her. Because my wife's luggage didn't arrive for two days. She liked the shirt more than mine.

Marcia drove us to some sightseeing attractions and in the afternoon we visited Patricia at the lawyer's office and watched and spent the time with her until we went to the restaurant of the 'The Girl From Ipanama,' the home of Bossa Nova in '60s. Over a glass of 'caipirinha,' Patricia was just an attractive girl, not a lawyer at all.

Visiting the 'Samba School' of Beija-Flores, the last year champion team, was a different story. A school of Samba? Yes, but the school began at 2:00am with over 3,000 Samba students. It seemed the whole local people of the region from the age of 4 to the old of unknown ages came out in the midnight for the practice. Everybody enjoyed and practicing itself was a real Festival.

In Rio, if you walk or drive a few blocks, you will encounter the blue ocean or shiny water of lagoon(Lagoa) with stiff rock mountains. Rio was 'Super' beautiful.  'Super' is Marcia's brand vernacular.

Ipanema, Leblon, Santa Teresa, Centro Catete, Sugarloaf Mt, Urca, Cristo Rodentor, Flamengo, Botafogo... Should I mention more? Yes, churasko, barbecue meat. Yami-yami.

Ciudad del Este, Paraguay
The Iguazu Falls amazed us with the magnificent water power, but not as much heart-beating experience to meet the Paraguyan Servas. In Foz do Iguazu, Brazil Servas Magdalena Ortiz and Rafael came us and we crossed the board to Paraguay.

When Korean war broke out, Paraguay sent us their soldiers to help us as I learned when I was a school boy. That's all I knew about Paraguay.

With Magdalena and Rafael, we visited the Tierra Guarani museum of the native people, downtown market, the river which borders three countries, Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. As Rafael is a senior engineer, he guided us to every corner of the Itaipu Dam. At night we could see the 'Sound and Light Show, projecting lights to the 18 spillway chutes of the gigantic dam. This is the national pride and big income sources for the Paraguayans. Do you know what is the largest hydro-electric project in the world? And which country is the world's largest exporter of the hydro-power? Yes, Itaipu Dam and Paraguy.

Magdalena was doing the quilt, adding beautiful knots and embroidery to a towel cloth, and my wife was so happy to learn the skills.

They took good care of their old father. Wherever they go, they go with him. Magdalena seems his real daughter by her neighbor. They educated their children well. They hosted a German boy for 6 months and sent their daughters to Switzerland and Germany. The family bond was so strong and they respected the education.

Buenos Aires Argentina
The bus ride from Iguazu, Brazil to Buenos Aires, Argentina took us 16 hours. 16 hours in a bus! We, living in a small country like Korea, couldn't imagine that vast coverage. We came to Host Jorge Casin's home. On seeing him, we just felt as if we were home. Putting our luggage by bed side, we presented our Servas document with small gift from Korea, and we fell into a deep sleep. Nonsense! In downtown Buenos Aires, during the day time!

The Servas people in Argentina were rather familiar to us, for Laura has been working as the International Host List Coordinator so many years and Chufeni, whom we met at Joint Canada-U.S Servas Meeting in Vancouver, other members are eager to organize and cooperate with Patagonian Youth meeting. We respect them with their enthusiasm for peace building efforts.

Stay three days in BA, we wished we had one more year, Microcentro, San Telmo, Antiques market, La Boca's colorful houses and the stadium of once Maradona played, Casa Rosada, Cafe Tortoni, Sigas La Vaca of the restaurant with Laura, Recoleta's Cemetary, Lady Evita's Museum, which was my wife's favorite place and the like.

Among others, the dinner meeting with Servas Argentina and attendees from other countries was the epoch of our trip. Anuj Shaha, from India, Marina Pacheco, from Brasil, Tiziana Di Roma, from Italy, From Argentine Servas: Cintia Amor (National Secretary), Pablo Colangelo (Deputy), Beatriz Giri (Peace Secretary), Laura Ragucci (interviewer), Jorge Casin, Estela Clavera, Elena Otegui (the former National Secretary) and her husband Rupert (from Cuba). And we also met ILili Kerekes from Mexico.

One we missed on the evening was a Tango show, which Jorge arranged. When we arrived, to our disappointment, it was too late. The talks among Servas people never end in Rio, like as in other countries.

At East End Subway Terminal, we met DH Andres Ramines. As he was busy as a head of human resourses department of LG, a Korean company, we could share only for 20 minutes in his lunch time. We talked about Servas movement in Chile, but time was too short to grasp the gist. We missed to see how the Chileans live and how the cultures differ from neighboring countries.

Even with short notice, Monica came to us in the downtown and went to her house. The first impression came from the artifacts she collected from all over the world witnessing her love of travelling.

She joined Servas in three years. And she was very much enjoying hosting and travelling. Her father from Arequipa joined us and we talked about Korea, especially the North and South relationships. The families speak good English, which made us a little relaxed from the tensions of nonverbal communication in this continent.

In Iquitos, the Amazon city of Peru
The life of Amajonas was more different than we imagined in Korea. When we were idling from the fatigue of the Amazon river canue adventure, in hot evening, I made a call to Servas Auror Olortegui, who lives a few blocks away from the hotel. You can't imagine how interesting the conversation was! As we, 'Ablo Espanol un poco,' she speaks little English .

We went to their home with tri-wheeled motor taxi. We talked a bit about our lives. Language problems? Not at all. for we have our hands, she and her husband had their  own. The facial expressions put the icing on the cake. They hosted an Italian Servas traveller a few weeks ago. That's all their Servas experience.

At a typical Amazonas restaurant. We tasted the turtle steaks. The turtles are tabooed killing and eating in Korea, for we think turtles are sacred animal for their long life. Out of curiosity, we ate it and I found that the meat made me stronger man as ever to my wife. Happy was the Amanonas' life.

Arequipa Peru
'White City' Arequipa's elevation was 2325m above sea level, the surrounded mountains, El Misti 5822m, Chanchani 6075m. We had headache, indigestion and hard to breathe due to the high altitude.

Servas Cecilia Guerra, a college student, came to us at bus terminal to host us. Due to the tight schedule we should decline her offer and went to Canon De Colca, the deepest canon in the world, to see the Andean eagles rising. Having promise to meet tomorrow evening, we asked whether she had any information about Servas Bolivia as she travelled there before.

At the remote village of Chivay, I had to forget the Andean Eagles, stayed in a hotel room for the altitude sickness. On the promised evening with Cecilia, we couldn't make it. The bus we rode had a technical problem of the gear unmatched and couldn't be speeding up. We met her again at the bus terminal for a short time and parted with no information about Bolivia Servas. We should've stayed with her for the Servas talking about that region.

Urubamba, Peru
In Cuzco, the capital city of the Inka Kingdom, we saw the remains and artifacts of the Inka's unique culture. From this city through mountain road, the Inka Trail leads to Machu Pichu by 85km  .

We went passing by green pastures and mountain path to suddenly down into the Sacred valley of Urubamba to Host George Manrique, Yoyo.

Host George, a long time Parisian of France, was leading a unique life here enjoying the environments and doing voluntary community service as an architect doing a large hotel project in the region.

He was very active in Servas, even he himself never travelled as a Servas. He hosted more than half of the total Servas travellers in Peru. Most travellers spend three days with him and after seeing the Machu Picchu, came back to him again on the way to Cuzco.

We spent that afternoon strolling in the main plaza watching people, a college band playing music, visiting the local market, eating with local people by the street side. He drove us to Village Moray, which is famous for it's deep amphitheater-like terracing, was fascinating and impressive spectacle. The Inkas used this as a crop-laboratory to use it's microclimate by each terrace.

On the hill, the village people working the knitting works in a group, were sitting in a circle for lunch and spread and shared the lunch prepared by individual. We were not exceptional, we joined them and ate together and when leaving we left some 'propina.'

We tried every possible means to meet Servas in this 'city of peace,' La Paz, with no success. After travelling in this country, it is my sincere hope that all Servas international community needs to support and encourage Servas Bolivia. The SI may choose one country each year to supports intensively.

Don't blame us being too rude to visit Monica's home again. On the last day of our journey returning back home for Korea. Arriving 8:00am in the airport and supposed to leave 01:00am next day, we went to her home by a taxi. The driver was so kind to find the house spending extra an hour or so. We felt the warm heart of Peruvians' through him.

On entering the house, we asked to take some rest first and when we woke up, everybody was having lunch in silence not to wake us up. This was our home in Peru away from home in Busan.

It was a national Pisco-Sour Day, a national drinks for the Peruvians. We enjoyed it and went out to the beach and food-festival sites with the families. Before crossing the wishing bridge, we said our wish without breathing until arrived at the other side. We tasted several kind of local food, and went to the lover's cliff. Monica's son and daughter was very bright with good education. We enjoyed their company very much.

Would you come to Korea?
In peace.
